Perfume is almost as old as humanity itself. The word perfume derives from the Latin “per” and “fumare” , which means to produce smoke, referring to the aromatic substances that were burned to create atmosphere. These essences were usually incense, myrrh or flowers and were used in offerings to the gods. As time went by, these aromas were no longer used solely for divine rituals and their use in humans expanded, as it was thought that the smells gave off a kind of aphrodisiac power.
“It all began in prehistory, the day one of those primitive men lit a bonfire to keep warm or to ward off beasts that could stalk him and, by pure chance, he lit some branches or resins from a tree and they began to give off a pleasant smell. , an unprecedented smell that no one had ever felt before. Perhaps the fact that they found it so pleasant and that the smoke rose to the sky made them think about using it as an offering to the deities” – Ramón Planas Buera (Barcelona Perfume Museum)
The art of perfume making was born in Egypt, later developed by the Arabs and the Romans. Within Europe, it all began during the Renaissance, especially in France, in the mid-14th century. It was then when they began to grow flowers and the first perfumers' laboratories were set up where they dedicated themselves to making and selling their own aromatic preparations.
Over time, the consumption of scented waters spread, specifically, the courts of the kings of France, Louis XIV and Louis XV , were great consumers of essences, known as "The perfumed court". History says that they saw a little obliged to hide the lack of hygiene and bad odors.
During the French Revolution the perfumery market stagnated. However, the guillotine in those times made the perfumed heads of the nobility roll, giving name to a new aroma called “Guillotine”. With Napoleon's call to the throne an expansion for perfumes began, perfumers would become a large industry, providing jobs and naturally, money. At this point, as is the case today, what was important was not only the fragrance , but also the bottle, packaging and advertising had to be taken into account.
Today, in the 21st century, the market has other needs. Before, it was the “nose” fragrance tasters who determined the direction of a fashion, now they must pay attention to the marketing department. Currently, perfumery is growing at unbridled rates. More and more perfume and cosmetic brands are coming out and there is no room for everyone. Along with online perfumeries, another business model has appeared in the sector that is causing a stir among consumers of high socioeconomic levels. They are what they call “ niche or signature perfumeries ,” where you can find exclusive fragrances from selective brands that create limited editions and are not distributed in traditional perfumeries.
Perfume reinforces the personality of the individual, only by smell can people be identified, managing to transmit different sensations and thoughts. It is, indisputably, an invisible complement that affects the senses and emotions. At Perfume's Club you can find the best perfume brands at the best price.
