Deodorant. A great ally for daily hygiene

Although we all know that showering is the most efficient way to wash our body, many people use deodorants to keep body odor under control. One of the biggest concerns is that we can see that we are sweating, that we get streaks on our clothes or even that we give off an unpleasant smell because of this.

Sweating is a mechanism our body uses to maintain a stable body temperature, but it can also appear in situations of stress or anxiety. Nobody likes to sweat, much less for it to cause us embarrassing moments. This is why choosing a good deodorant or antiperspirant is key to being able to control it.

Deodorant or antiperspirant

There is often confusion between these two terms, as the same word is used as if it were a synonym, but it should be noted that they are two different products.

Antiperspirants, as their name suggests, help control sweat and body odor . They prevent sweat from reaching the surface of the skin and reduce the number of odor-causing bacteria thanks to their antimicrobial agents. They generally work through aluminum or zirconium bases that dissolve when they come into contact with sweat and moisture, prolonging their action for up to 24 hours.

On the other hand, deodorants differ from antiperspirants in that they only contain antimicrobial agents to control odor. That is, they do not control sweating levels by blocking the pores of the armpit. They may contain alcohol and their effect lasts as long as the scent of the perfume .

Both products usually contain perfume that helps to mask the bad smells of body sweat. Because they contain alcohol or aluminum salts, many people do not tolerate some of the ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants. It is important to do an initial test to check if we have any allergies to the ingredients that make up these products.

Types of deodorants

• Spray deodorant : this is the most commonly used deodorant due to its convenience and rapid absorption. This type of product can also act as a perfume and can be applied to other areas of the body. It should be applied at a suitable distance so as not to damage the skin. If we have sensitive skin, it is better to use one that does not contain alcohol.
• Roll-on deodorants : This is an easy-to-apply format that produces a feeling of freshness when applied. It is applied by dragging a spherical ball across the skin. For individual use, it is mainly associated with skin care and leaves a feeling of moisture. It is advisable to look for some type of quick-drying roll-on deodorant to avoid staining clothing.
• Stick deodorant : This is a compact deodorant that is applied directly to the skin. This type of deodorant is usually drier and often contains soothing ingredients to counteract irritation. They can leave stains on clothing due to their texture.
• Gel or cream deodorant : this is the least used format, as its application is more laborious than the other formats. It is applied as if it were a body cream and is an ideal option for sensitive or dry skin, as after application the skin is more hydrated.

Recommendations for the use of deodorants

We review a series of indications for better use of deodorant and antiperspirant products:

• Deodorants should be applied right after getting out of a hot shower, as the pores are open and absorb all the product. But we should do it when the skin is already dry, because most deodorants are for application on dry skin.
• We must allow the skin a reasonable amount of time to absorb the product, in this way we will avoid the appearance of spots on the skin.
• We recommend waxing your armpits to avoid unpleasant body odour. If you have recently waxed, we recommend using alcohol-free products to avoid annoying irritation.
• Parabens and aluminium salts are not eliminated from the body, but are stored in our organism. For this reason, it is advisable not to use them excessively.
• Be careful when using deodorants during pregnancy or breastfeeding and do not use adult cosmetics on children.
