The organization has worked for 85 years for a just world in which girls and young women can learn, lead, decide and prosper, and drives changes in policies and practices at the local, national and global levels to address the root causes of discrimination. against girls and young women.
- 78% of girls have suffered street harassment.
- 21% say they have gotten used to it.
- Only 3% report to the authorities.
- 77% of bullying situations do not involve physical contact and range from staring, whistling, chasing, comments and insinuations.
Safer Cities for Girls is a Plan International program that, so far, has been carried out in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Alcobendas, Paracuellos del Jarama, Móstoles, as well as cities around the world, such as Delhi (India), Kampala (Uganda), Brussels (Belgium), Sydney (Australia) or Lima (Peru).
The organization carries out this project so that it is the girls themselves who share their experiences and demand the necessary measures to transform cities into more egalitarian spaces, of inclusion, tolerance and opportunities. In this sense, the recommendations and good practices are shared with the town halls and managers of all the participating cities to prevent and raise awareness about street harassment.
Plan International works on the safety of girls and women in cities within the framework of the international Safer Cities initiative, developed in collaboration with UN Habitat and Women in Cities International. In 2018, the (Un)safe in the city report offered a first global diagnosis, through data and experiences of street harassment in five cities on all continents.
